At Simonside Primary, we believe that a high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and it is our intention for all pupils to be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science.

We want to equip our children with not only the minimum statutory requirements of the science National Curriculum but to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes, all whilst gaining a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena.

Science and Forest School

Many of our weekly Forest School sessions are linked to our science curriculum. These sessions are ran by Sam, our experienced Forest School Lead, and are planned in conjunction with class teachers to follow on and extend children’s learning.

Here are Year 4 exploring changes in states of matter. Children watched solid wax turn to liquid over the fire and then turn back to a solid again as it cooled. Check out their candles!

As part of their ‘Rocks and Soils’ topic, Year 3 investigated the three different types of rocks and whether rocks are permeable or impermeable.

Year 1 searched for signs of Spring outdoors before creating some beautiful vases of flowers.

When learning about ‘plants’, Year 3 discovered that plants and trees disperse their seeds in different ways.
