Simonside Primary School has an embedded PSHE provision that is part of our broad and balanced curriculum. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is an ongoing key part of our curriculum and school ethos. In preparing our children for their future life in our modern world, British Values are promoted through the overarching aims and objectives of PSHE, by supporting our children to become healthy and responsible members of the local and wider community, recognising their importance in societies from an early age.
Our PSHE curriculum intends to maximise the children’s outcomes through providing an inclusive curriculum, accessible to all. We provide a spiral curriculum, where the children return to themes during the year and throughout their years of learning at Simonside. This promotes the children’s understanding and recognises the relevance of many aspects of PSHE throughout the whole year.
Through the returning of themes we allow the children to children learn, remember, then develop a full understanding of the the key concepts that are delivered. Our discrete lessons, cross curricular links, assemblies, theme days and focus weeks develop the whole child, physically and emotionally, promoting well being. This leads our children to become: hardworking, team-players, motivated, confident, independent and also resilient from an early age. They feel confident in their own rights and responsibilities, whilst not being afraid to tackle issues appropriately within society.
The acquisition of these skills allow our children to access the wider curriculum; within and beyond school and lead our pupils to have a value of self worth, where they and others can recognise the positive role that they have within the modern, diverse society that we live.
Focus Weeks
Throughout the year, we spend a full week or a day focusing upon a particular topic throughout the school. Although the learning is not limited just to these weeks, the children thoroughly enjoy finding out about different PSHE topics through their Literacy and other subjects of learning.
No Outsiders Week
‘I loved this week. I told everyone that I was Autistic and found out that there were other people with Autism too. We could tell each other how it felt and tell the class. It was so cool.’
‘I found out that there are so many different types of families. I love mine, but wish I had more brothers and sisters like ……….’
‘I am the same as my friend because we both are girls. I like playing tig at playtime though, but she doesn’t. That’s OK though because we both like playing together in the water.’
Children’s Mental Health Week
‘Like being connected to your friends in school and in football club’ – Y2 pupil
‘Teachers Get Connected in school, you all talk to each other like we are meant to talk to each other ‘ – A quote from a Y1 child during an assembly.
‘With my family, we can go to the walk like you have told us and talk to empty our bag of worries’ YR pupil
I like connecting with my cousins, we dance and sing and make each other smile’ Y3 pupil

Protected Characteristics.
The Equality Act came into force from October 2010 providing a modern, single legal framework with clear, streamlined law to more effectively tackle disadvantage and discrimination. It stated that it is against the law (UK) to discriminate against anyone because of:
• age
• being or becoming a transsexual person
• being married or in a civil partnership
• being pregnant or on maternity leave
• disability
• race including colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin
• religion, belief or lack of religion/belief
• sex
• sexual orientation
These are called ‘protected characteristics’, and schools have a duty of care to protect all pupils from discrimination or harassment. Kapow PSHE helps schools understand and promote these characteristics more fully and in a child centred way.
The mapping document , in the document links above shows which Kapow Primary RSE and PSHE lessons support schools in teaching pupils to show respect for
those who share the protected characteristics. These issues are integrated into the curriculum, rather than addressed separately,
and are taught in an age-appropriate way. It also explains more about each of the 9 protected characteristics.
