At Simonside, the intention of our MFL curriculum is to develop an interest in and thirst for learning other languages. We aim to introduce the learning of the French language and the understanding of its culture in enjoyable and stimulating ways. We hope to embed the essential skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing. It is intended that when children leave Simonside Primary, they will have a natural curiosity and confidence to explore other countries, cultures and languages, accepting that, in a multilingual society it is a valuable skill to be able to communicate effectively with others in another language.
Welcome to our school!

International Schools Award
We have recently received the International School Intermediate Award. We are so proud of the recognition as we have worked hard to promote languages and cultural understanding across our school.

Key Stage 1
In Key Stage 1, the children are introduced to French through songs, games and stories. We have a real focus on the enjoyment of learning a new language. Our focus is mainly on speaking and listening, with lots of opportunities for the children to listen to French and practise speaking it too.
Reception start their language journey a little later, while they settle into their new environment.
We hope to foster a love of language and that children will have the confidence to practise speaking their new skills at home.
Key Stage 2
In Key Stage 2, we build on the knowledge the children have already gained in Key Stage 1. The length of French lessons increases in Key Stage 2 and also includes more reading and writing. We still incorporate lots of songs, games and stories throughout our French curriculum.
Our aim is to provide the children with the skills and confidence to use their French knowledge outside of the school environment, maybe even on a holiday to France.
European Christmas Tree Decoration Exchange
We thoroughly enjoyed taking part in this fantastic event again. Here are some photos of the wonderful decorations we received. Have a look at our French display in school too – there are even more decorations and letters on there.

Simonside’s 70th Birthday
It was Simonside’s 70th Birthday in 2023, and as part of our celebrations we held a whole school picnic. Prior to this, each class chose a country to learn about. They all prepared clues in class and made a table for their country. During the picnic, families all went around to guess each country. Can you guess who each class learnt about?
Lingotot European Day of Languages Online Festival
We took part in the Lingogtot European Day of Languages Online Festival and did some activities linked to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It was so much fun.
Some of the children said:
“I liked listening to a real French person talk.”
“I didn’t know Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was in French too!”
Listen to our super children singing and speaking in French…
