Physical Education

In and through PE, our pupils will develop fundamental skills in games, dance, gymnastics, athletics, OAA (Outdoor and Adventurous Activities) and swimming which they can transfer and apply to positively impact their mental attitude. This will ensure they are confident, determined and passionate about their learning so they are physically active for life and reach their maximum potential.

Our belief is that EVERYONE can achieve in PE and we place significant emphasis on providing children with a stimulating, fun environment to support their development of skills in all areas of this subject.  As a direct result of this, we have seen a real surge in enthusiasm for this subject over the past few years.

At Simonside we follow the ‘Real PE’ scheme to ensure all children have the physical literacy, emotional and thinking skills to achieve in PE, sport and life. The foundations of the ‘Real PE’ programme are based on Fundamental Movement Skills – agility, balance and coordination, inclusive competition and broader essential holistic skills. These skills are the building blocks that underpin the ability to play and be involved in many different sports and activities and it is therefore essential that every child masters these skills.

In addition to our ‘Real PE’ sessions, children in Years 2, 3, 5 and 6 receive specialist coaching from Premier Sports coaches, who are fully qualified in a range of different physical activities, as well has having experience in making lessons fun and enjoyable for children. Years 3 and 4 also receive swimming instruction for a term and a half at Haven Point, allowing them to develop vital life skills in the water.

We regularly participate in competition and events within South Tyneside, through the South Tyneside School Games Organisers.  In addition, we organise and lead our own Cross Country and Athletics events at Simonside – hosting other schools from around the local area. In recent years, we have also taken teams of children to Cross Country and Athletics competitions in Chester-Le-Street, where the children have won individual and team honours.

As passionate sports participants, we often link our love of sport with fund raising activities. Some of the events we have participated in include: a sponsored penalty shoot-out, raising over £700 for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation; and a sponsored run/jog/walk, during which we raised a magnificent £1086 for Caring for Kian!

Through PE and other sport-related events, we aim to raise childrens’ awareness of the importance of healthy lifestyles and – as such – we are very proud to hold the Healthy Schools status.
